Is the Male Model Overlooked?

In an industry where the female counterpart trumps the male twice-fold does the male model get overlooked? Sure it’s programmed in our nature to think female when you hear the word FASHION; however in an industry where the male is used mainly for his pecs rather than his runway walk or hype I feel we get left behind and when I say we I mean us BOYS. Why though? Why are we so overlooked when the global menswear market had a total revenue of 423.2 Billion dollars last year?

Take on account that I obviously know that the menswear brands use male models duh! There’s definitely a use for us, but where are the male supermodels? Where are the male models who are booking magazine covers? Where are the male models who are faces of Brands? Yes of course they are fewer publications that cater to men entirely, but why aren’t male models getting picked for the cover of GQ, Esquire, Details, lets step outside the box a bit are male models booking W Magazine? Where’s Tyson Beckford or Baptiste Giabiconi on these covers! Okay Tyson maybe a reach since he’s a veteran but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind gracing the cover. So what’s the issue? I wish I could get to an editor to ask them that specific question. Can male models not generate a high enough profit ? Basically can Male Models sell magazines like the opposite sex? Better yet, has anyone tried it out? It amazes me how much I fight advocate for male equality in an industry that’s all about the woman. I’m just shocked at the difference in numbers; for instance, Gisele Bundchen is worth $320 million dollars courtesy of, while Tyson Beckford is only worth $14 million cited by the same source. Of course, you’ve seen more of her than you have of him, but why is that? Why can’t male models dominate the way women can in the same industry?

Is there a lack of confidence in publications to push a male model the way the do female models? For instance Cara, Chanel, Joan, and so on we know these models. We hear their names, we see them everywhere, their even becoming celebrities in their own right, why can’t male models do that, and not just be big in one country? Tyson Beckford is big here for a male model, does his light shine bright overseas? I know of Baptiste, because I pay attention to Chanel. Would I know of him if I didn’t maybe, maybe not. My exact point why does there have to be a grey area? No matter what women and men know Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Kate Moss. Can men outside of this industry name a male model? Can a woman outside of the industry name a male model? Excluding those I spoke about?

  1. There are well paid popular male models Like David Gandy, David Agbodji, Sean O’Pry, Corey Baptiste, Fernando Cabral and Clement Chabernaud. These guys book major campaigns, walk every runway and stay on photo shoots. I think the question is where are more menswear magazines. Guys dont sell women’s magazines and neither men’s. That’s why you don’t see many men on covers as well as men dont have huge buying power in the fashion industry.

    • I know Big male models get paid, but what they make can’t even compare to what the female model makes. Yet again, David Gandy is only worth $10 million, Sean O’pry is only worth 6.5 million. Why kate moss is worth $75 million, Naomi is worth $48 million, Cindy crawford $100 million

    • Menswear Industry made 423.2 Billion dollars last year. Surely men have buying powering. Menswear Fashion Week exist for a reason.

      • You know a business can still bring in money and a demographic of it’s purchasers can still be under severed? Again, I’m not disagreeing with you but the article is about why are male models underpaid. And the reasoning isn’t because it’s a shortage in models it because men don’t sell men’s products. Look at your ads. Men don’t sell magazines as well as there aren’t many men outlets ( a shortage in men’s magazine, male fashion site or even male bloggers on menswear) for male models to be booked. A lot of the “423.2 billion dollar industry is marketed to men by women. Yes there is a menswear fashion week (held in the summer) but how many men outside of fashion know about compared to the regular fashion week? Your claim isn’t invalid I’m simply stating the reason to why men are paid as well as women models.

      • i totally understand where you’re coming from but it wasn’t just about the pay. I also wanted to know why menswear magazines don’t use them

  2. those male models are like barely making it compared to their female counterparts. sure $10 million isn’t a little bit of money, but compared to those numbers rashad just shelled out. it’s a hell of a big difference. so no they aren’t well paid.

  3. there’s definitely a drought in male supermodels. the only magazine I see male models on is I_D magazine, and I think sometimes perhaps paper, but those mainstream magazines only feature celebrities, and not even celebrities models

  4. this was an excellent read. I never really paid much attention to the fact that we really don’t have a dominating male supermodel
